Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa is an impressive skyscraper located in Downtown Dubai next to the Dubai Fountain and the Dubai Mall. This skyscraper can’t be overlooked and is visible from every location in Dubai. This is because of its height of 829,8 m (2.722 ft) which makes it the tallest building in the world. Until its opening the skyscraper had the name Burj Dubai, which means Dubai Tower. But later the skyscraper was renamed after the ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The idea to create the Burj Khalifa was part of the plan to obtain more international recognition for Dubai and to diversify from the oil-based economy to a more service- and tourism oriented economy.

The construction began in 2004, and became the highest building in the world in 2007, it was completed in 2009 and opened its doors in 2010. At the time the Burj Khalifa was finished its total construction costs were estimated at about USD$1,5 billion. The design is derived from Islamic architecture, like the shape of the spiral minaret at the Great Mosque of Samarra which grows slender as it rises, mixed with neo-futuristic architecture. Regarding the layout has been chosen for a y-shaped plan, which is ideal for allowing its hotels and residential units to have great outside views and lots of inward natural light.

In the Burj Khalifa are offices, apartments, restaurants, clubs, swimming pools, gyms and a hotel present. This hotel is the Armani Hotel which has also some Armani residences and are all designed by the famous fashion-designer Giorgio Armani. In total there are 900 residential apartments in the Burj Khalifa, which were sold out within 8 hours, after being on the market for sale.

There are 163 floors in the Burj Khalifa and its highest swimming pool is at the 76th floor, its highest restaurant with fantastic views is at the 122nd floor and its highest nightclub is at the 144th floor. To get to all these floors the building has 57 elevators and 8 escalators.

In total has the Burj Khalifa 24.348 windows with a surface of 120.000 m2 (1.290.000 sq ft). It is hard to imagine how much surface this is, but it will take 36 window cleaners about three to four months to clean the total exterior of the Burj Khalifa. To wash all these windows there are horizontal tracks installed on the exterior of the 40th, 73rd, and 109th floor. Above the 109th floor there is made use of unmanned machines. But the top of the spire is cleaned by professional window cleaners hanging on ropes. These need to be professionals because of the wind the top of the building could sway about a total of 1,5 m (4,9 ft).

For visitors there are two observation decks with breathtaking views over Dubai. The first is the observation deck is the outdoor observation deck, with the name At the Top Observation Deck, and is at the 124th floor at 452 m (1483 ft). If you want to go to the Burj Khalifa by metro you should go to station Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa. There are also bus lines which stop at the Grand Drive entrance of the Dubai Mall. Dubai Autodrome

The circuit of the Dubai Autodrome is 5.39 km (3.35 mi) long and was opened in 2004 to bring the Formula 1 to Dubai. The track has four racing configurations, two additional non-racing sections and is sanctioned by the FIA, which means that Formula 1 races can be held at this circuit. This hasn’t happened yet though, as the Formula 1 race of the United Arab Emirates went to the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.

Although the Formula 1 race doesn’t take place at the Dubai Autodrome, several other important races already do or did take place here, like the FIA GT Championship, the UAE Clio Cup, the A1 Grand Prix, the Dubai 24 Hour, the UAE Touring Car Championship, the Porsche Cup Middle East, the NGK Racing Series, the UAE Clio Cup and the UAE Sportbikes Championship.

If you want to enjoy a racing experience at the circuit of the Dubai Autodrome there are several possibilities available. You can for example book a Renault Clio Cup-race car, a Ferrari GT, or even a Formula 1 like car which you can drive by yourself.

At the Dubai Autodrome you can also find a Kartdrome, where you can go karting. The Dubai Kartdrome has an indoor and outdoor track. The largest track is an impressive outdoor track, which is a 1.2 km (0.75 mi) long international standard karting track with several features such as a bridge and a tunnel. Who is allowed to drive

When possible you should always drive on the right side of the road. Overtaking should be done on the left lane. If the right lane is occupied or if you want to follow the direction of your lane, then it’s better to keep your lane.

Dubai has many impatient drivers who do not adhere to the overtaking rules or ignore the speed limits, so you should not be surprised if someone else breaks the traffic regulations. It is also quite common for drivers to drive way too close behind you. If someone breaks the traffic rules, do not make a fuss about it. As making obscene gestures for example can get you deported. It is better to focus your attention to the road and what’s going on ahead of you.

As you may know Dubai attracts people from all across the world. And these people bring their own varied driving styles from their home country with them, both the good and the bad habits. Because people come from different countries and cultures you should try to avoid hand gestures, as they are easily misinterpreted.

In Dubai you are not allowed to have any alcohol in your blood when you drive. So if you have drunk any alcohol during the day it is recommended to take a taxi or let yourself be driven by someone else.

Other traffic regulations tend to be fairly standard. It is obligated to wear seatbelts, stop for the red light, try not to pass the amber light and always stop when you are involved in a traffic accident.

After a traffic accident you can call the alarm number 999. The police will report who’s fault the accident was, which is necessary for insurance purposes and if you wish to repair your car.

The infrastructure of Dubai

In Dubai not all hotels, restaurants, malls and businesses have an address. So make sure to bring a navigation system. When you rent a car you can be sure to have a GPS system in your car. But if you haven’t rented a car then you can use Google Maps to download a map which you can use to navigate.

Street maps aren’t always up to date either, as Dubai is a quickly evolving city. There is always construction being done somewhere. Dubai has turned into a world city within a span of a few decades, so you can imagine how busy the locals have been.

At the moment there are six toll gates in Dubai that do not have any toll booths, which can be found on the following locations:
– Al Mamzar at Al Ittihad Road
– Airport Tunnel at Beirut Street
– Al Garhoud Bridge at Sheikh Rashid Road
– Al Safa at Sheikh Zayed Road
– Al Barsha at Sheikh Zayed Road
– Al Maktoum Bridge at Umm Hurair Road

If you want to pass these gates you need to buy a small Salik sticker tag and stick it on your windshield. This sticker is linked to your prepaid Salik account where you can put a deposit on it. From now on each time you drive through a toll gate it detects the sticker and writes off a small amount of your deposit. If you drive through a toll gate without a Salik sticker tag, you can still buy one within ten days. After ten days you will get a fine. Note that rental cars already have a Salik sticker tag on their windscreen.
