The best places to visit in the city of Dubai.
When we think of the middle east and the Bedouin people we think of people riding the sandy dunes in the afternoon. Camels are beautiful animals well adjusted to survive in the harsh desert climate, so it comes as no surprise they have been the primary means of transportation for local nomadic people for as long as can be recalled.
A popular attraction in Dubai is to recreate this experience with camel rides, which are organized on a regular basis. When you have the opportunity why not enjoy this charming experience of a camel safari through the Dubaian desert into the sunset. By booking a ride in advance you can be sure to enjoy this authentic experience.
Dubai is surrounded by endless sandy dunes, which makes it an ideal place for quad biking. Adrenaline freaks who like dune bashing will find everything their heart desires here. Of course quad biking through the dunes can be done at a safe pace and under professional supervision, so it’s open to beginners and experts alike. The desert has never been more spectacular.
The Burj Khalifa is an impressive skyscraper located in Downtown Dubai next to the Dubai Fountain and the Dubai Mall. This skyscraper can’t be overlooked and is visible from every location in Dubai. This is because of its height of 829,8 m (2.722 ft) which makes it the tallest building in the world. Until its opening the skyscraper had the name Burj Dubai, which means Dubai Tower. But later the skyscraper was renamed after the ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The idea to create the Burj Khalifa was part of the plan to obtain more international recognition for Dubai and to diversify from the oil-based economy to a more service- and tourism oriented economy.
The construction began in 2004, and became the highest building in the world in 2007, it was completed in 2009 and opened its doors in 2010. At the time the Burj Khalifa was finished its total construction costs were estimated at about USD$1,5 billion. The design is derived from Islamic architecture, like the shape of the spiral minaret at the Great Mosque of Samarra which grows slender as it rises, mixed with neo-futuristic architecture. Regarding the layout has been chosen for a y-shaped plan, which is ideal for allowing its hotels and residential units to have great outside views and lots of inward natural light.
In the Burj Khalifa are offices, apartments, restaurants, clubs, swimming pools, gyms and a hotel present. This hotel is the Armani Hotel which has also some Armani residences and are all designed by the famous fashion-designer Giorgio Armani. In total there are 900 residential apartments in the Burj Khalifa, which were sold out within 8 hours, after being on the market for sale.
There are 163 floors in the Burj Khalifa and its highest swimming pool is at the 76th floor, its highest restaurant with fantastic views is at the 122nd floor and its highest nightclub is at the 144th floor. To get to all these floors the building has 57 elevators and 8 escalators.
In total has the Burj Khalifa 24.348 windows with a surface of 120.000 m2 (1.290.000 sq ft). It is hard to imagine how much surface this is, but it will take 36 window cleaners about three to four months to clean the total exterior of the Burj Khalifa. To wash all these windows there are horizontal tracks installed on the exterior of the 40th, 73rd, and 109th floor. Above the 109th floor there is made use of unmanned machines. But the top of the spire is cleaned by professional window cleaners hanging on ropes. These need to be professionals because of the wind the top of the building could sway about a total of 1,5 m (4,9 ft).
For visitors there are two observation decks with breathtaking views over Dubai. The first is the observation deck is the outdoor observation deck, with the name At the Top Observation Deck, and is at the 124th floor at 452 m (1483 ft). A double-decker lift will zip you to the outdoor observation deck with a speed up to 10 m (33 ft) per second. One floor higher is the attraction A Falcon’s Eye View. This attraction allows you to explore Dubai from the perspective of a falcon. The second observation deck, with the name At the Top Sky, is at the 148th floor at 555 m (1821 ft) height. With this visit you will get extra services and high-tech experiences. Tickets can be bought in The Dubai Mall at the ticket office of ‘At the Top’. It is recommended to buy the tickets online in advance for a specific time and date, because it will get you a discount and it prevents you ending up in long queues. From both observations decks you could make beautiful pictures of Dubai and its landmarks like the Burj Al Arab, Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai Marina and the Palm Islands.
If you want to go to the Burj Khalifa by metro you should go to station Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa. There are also bus lines which stop at the Grand Drive entrance of the Dubai Mall. If you want to take a taxi we from Meet The Cities have experienced that you have to explain very exactly where you want to go to, for example to the entrance of the Dubai Mall, or to the entrance of the Burj Khalifa. Else will the taxi driver choose a location that he/she considers best for you. And if you have rented a car you could drive via the Financial Centre Road to the parking garage of the Dubai Mall which has 14.000 parking spots.
Ski Dubai might be one of the most exciting family friendly attractions in Dubai, as it is the biggest indoor ski park in the world. It’s hard to phantom how they managed to create this ambitious project in a desert city. But after spending my day skiing and drinking warm chocolate milk at Ski Dubai I have to say it’s a lovely experience.
Ski Dubai can be found in the heart of Dubai, at the Mall of the Emirates, over which it towers with a height of 85 meters. It’s suitable for both beginners and experts, as it has five different slopes in various degrees of difficulty. It’s also possible to learn how to ski or snowboard through the courses that are offered. One of the most unique features of Ski Dubai is that you can book an encounter with real penguins that waddle through the snow park at set times.
If you are looking for things to do in Dubai then skiing in this extravagant ski resort should be on the top of your list. You might want to consider booking a trip to this winter wonderland in advance, as it is truly an experience that’s unique to Dubai that you can’t miss out on.
Another world record breaking attraction is the Dubai Miracle Garden, which is the largest natural flower garden on the planet. From colorful flower castles, giant cats and elephants to an entire airplane made from flowers.
The Dubai Miracle Garden is perfect for a vibrant day with the whole family, as there is so much to see and do. Everything is well maintained, as you can expect from Dubai, making this extensive flower garden one of the beautiful parks in the world. The theme of the park changes every season, ensuring there are always new surprising things to see. There are also plenty of places to sit down and enjoy a bite and a drink, so all your needs are well taken care of.
The park also has an indoor butterfly garden, which has over 15.000 butterflies to enjoy. Especially kids love to see all these colorful creatures flying around. And if you still have energy left, then you can check out the trampoline park and the souvenir shop of the Dubai Miracle Garden.
The flower park is open for 6 months a year during the winter and spring season, as the summers are a bit too warm for the plants. So if you are in Dubai enjoying one its notoriously pleasant warm winters then you can’t really miss checking out these flourishing flowers in bloom and taking some pictures to create some unforgettable moments.

With the tall buildings of the Dubai marina in the background under the starry night sky, often paired with on-board performances of authentic Arabic music. The graceful Falcon is the national animal of the United Arab Emirates. In the UAE millions of dollars are spent every year to protect and preserve these lovely creatures in the wild. Falconry used to play a central aspect in Dubaian culture as it allowed the people to catch small animals to eat. With a falconry trip you will be entertained with an interesting show about the old Dubaian tradition, how falcons are handled and catch their lure prey.
In the southeast of Dubai you will find the Dubai Autodrome, which is the motorsports circuit of Dubai. This popular race circuit is part of Dubai Motor City where all kind of race events take place.
The circuit of the Dubai Autodrome is 5.39 km (3.35 mi) long and was opened in 2004 to bring the Formula 1 to Dubai. The track has four racing configurations, two additional non-racing sections and is sanctioned by the FIA, which means that Formula 1 races can be held at this circuit. This hasn’t happened yet though, as the Formula 1 race of the United Arab Emirates went to the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi.
Although the Formula 1 race doesn’t take place at the Dubai Autodrome, several other important races already do or did take place here, like the FIA GT Championship, the UAE Clio Cup, the A1 Grand Prix, the Dubai 24 Hour, the UAE Touring Car Championship, the Porsche Cup Middle East, the NGK Racing Series, the UAE Clio Cup and the UAE Sportbikes Championship.
If you want to enjoy a racing experience at the circuit of the Dubai Autodrome there are several possibilities available. You can for example book a Renault Clio Cup-race car, a Ferrari GT, or even a Formula 1 like car which you can drive by yourself.
At the Dubai Autodrome you can also find a Kartdrome, where you can go karting. The Dubai Kartdrome has an indoor and outdoor track. The largest track is an impressive outdoor track, which is a 1.2 km (0.75 mi) long international standard karting track with several features such as a bridge and a tunnel. At this track the UAE championship karting is usually being hosted. If you are older than the age of 7, which is likely the case, you can drive a kart yourself at one of these tracks. Suits, helmets, balaclavas and gloves are included when you book a kart-session.
The most convenient way of getting around in Dubai is by car. This is mainly due to the slightly lacking public transport that is still being developed. The quality of the public transport itself is great, but it still doesn’t connect all parts of Dubai and hasn’t got the frequency that many people would like it to have. So, driving in Dubai is not only very popular among locals, but among expats and tourists as well.
It really helps that the roads and especially the highways are superb, but just like in any city there are some general things that you should know about them. Here are some tips that will help you understand the specific situation on the roads of Dubai on forehand.
On the road you will see many beautiful and exclusive cars, but keep your eyes on the road in front of you and watch your mirrors to make sure there isn’t a sports car approaching you with a dazzling speed.
Cars in Dubai drive on the right side of the road and overtaking is done by the left. Dubai has no fast lanes, but the very most left lane is often used as one by speeders. Keep this in mind when you drive. Not everyone is a good driver in Dubai and risky overtakes can happen on both sides of your car. The safest thing to do is to keep driving in a predictable manner. If you see headlights flashing in your rearview mirror chances are high that someone in a fast car is speeding up behind you. It is often a good idea to get safely out of their way, but only when the traffic situation allows it.
It is also important to note that you should never leave your children or animals behind in the car as it can get really hot in Dubai, especially during the summer months. For the same reason it is always smart to take some water with you when you travel. If you ever get stuck in traffic you will be more than happy to have it.
Renting a car is probably one of the most practical decisions you can make in Dubai. When you rent a car in Dubai it is recommended to pick a reliable international company with a venue at the airport of Dubai. This way you can just step into the car when you arrive in Dubai. And when you leave again you also drop the car off at the airport again, which is extremely convenient. Especially booking your favorite car in advance, so that it is ready for you when you arrive at the airport, is a time saver. Using a website that compares car rental companies with each other can save you quite a bit of money as you can select your favorite car at the lowest price that is offered.
The city of Dubai is fairly spread out which means you will travel quite a lot through the city. And people often use GPS coordinates instead of street names to mark a location. So when you decide which car to rent you always have to make sure the car has a GPS system. This will make your journeys much more easier.
If you carry a lot of baggage with you or when you intend to shop a lot it is certainly recommended to pick a SUV. Not only do SUVs look nice and make it easier to overlook the road, they also offer plenty of space for your luggage, which can be invaluable during your travels.
To drive in Dubai you have to be 18 years old. Drivers from western countries, such as the EU, Canada and the USA, can usually drive their own local driver’s license and a passport. People from non-western countries, with the exception of Turkey, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa and Japan, need to get an international driving license.
Many tourists wonder if women are allowed to drive in Dubai. It’s good to know that women are indeed allowed to drive in Dubai.
The maximum speed limit in Dubai is 120 km/h, although most roads have a lower speed limit. As speed limits can vary on the same roads, for example when you near an intersection, you always have to be attentive to road signs.
It is very common to have mobile radar controls in Dubai where people get fined if they exceed the speed limit by 20 km/h. But not every road has this grace limit so you should not rely on it.
When possible you should always drive on the right side of the road. Overtaking should be done on the left lane. If the right lane is occupied or if you want to follow the direction of your lane, then it’s better to keep your lane.
Dubai has many impatient drivers who do not adhere to the overtaking rules or ignore the speed limits, so you should not be surprised if someone else breaks the traffic regulations. It is also quite common for drivers to drive way too close behind you. If someone breaks the traffic rules, do not make a fuss about it. As making obscene gestures for example can get you deported. It is better to focus your attention to the road and what’s going on ahead of you.
As you may know Dubai attracts people from all across the world. And these people bring their own varied driving styles from their home country with them, both the good and the bad habits. Because people come from different countries and cultures you should try to avoid hand gestures, as they are easily misinterpreted.
In Dubai you are not allowed to have any alcohol in your blood when you drive. So if you have drunk any alcohol during the day it is recommended to take a taxi or let yourself be driven by someone else.
Other traffic regulations tend to be fairly standard. It is obligated to wear seatbelts, stop for the red light, try not to pass the amber light and always stop when you are involved in a traffic accident.
After a traffic accident you can call the alarm number 999. The police will report who’s fault the accident was, which is necessary for insurance purposes and if you wish to repair your car.
In Dubai not all hotels, restaurants, malls and businesses have an address. So make sure to bring a navigation system. When you rent a car you can be sure to have a GPS system in your car. But if you haven’t rented a car then you can use Google Maps to download a map which you can use to navigate.
Street maps aren’t always up to date either, as Dubai is a quickly evolving city. There is always construction being done somewhere. Dubai has turned into a world city within a span of a few decades, so you can imagine how busy the locals have been.
At the moment there are six toll gates in Dubai that do not have any toll booths, which can be found on the following locations:
– Al Mamzar at Al Ittihad Road
– Airport Tunnel at Beirut Street
– Al Garhoud Bridge at Sheikh Rashid Road
– Al Safa at Sheikh Zayed Road
– Al Barsha at Sheikh Zayed Road
– Al Maktoum Bridge at Umm Hurair Road
If you want to pass these gates you need to buy a small Salik sticker tag and stick it on your windshield. This sticker is linked to your prepaid Salik account where you can put a deposit on it. From now on each time you drive through a toll gate it detects the sticker and writes off a small amount of your deposit. If you drive through a toll gate without a Salik sticker tag, you can still buy one within ten days. After ten days you will get a fine. Note that rental cars already have a Salik sticker tag on their windscreen.
